Liberal City Commission Meets, Purchases Lots For Self-Help Housing Program

The Liberal City Commission met Tuesday evening at 6:30 for their regularly scheduled meeting Among the items on the agenda, the Commission heard a presentation on the "Be Liberal" program from Jack Cooley. The program brings together four sectors of the community, business, education, government, and human services, and through surveys, interviews, and town hall meetings, helps identify needs and growth plans for a community, and works at moving a community forward. The Commission supported the organization and voted to help fund the project in the amount of $1000.00. The Commissioners also approved a contract with Charlesworth and Associates in the amount of $5950.00 for Risk Management Services, approved the acceptance of an abandoned Anadarko pipeline which the city will use to move water from the Wastewater Treatment plant to irrigated circles of crops, and heard a report from Officer Miller, School Resource Officer, on a new anti-gang program called G.R.E.A.T. This will be implemented in the 4th and 5th grade classes in Liberal. The City Commissioners also the purchase of 5 lots on South Jordan Street at $8,000.00 each for the Self-Help Housing Program.The City will be reimbursed the cost of the lots from the homeowners who build on these lots. The next meeting of the Liberal City Commission is November 27th.
