LHS Volleyball Ready After Topsy Turvy Offseason

The Liberal High School girls are ready to play some volleyball.  It was a tumultuous off season for the girls.  Last year’s head coach Jelena Cohadarevic took the Seward head coaching job in late January.  That coaching vacancy drifted into the spring and carried over into the all important summer time.  LHS alum Logan Dodge spearheaded an effort to coach the team for workouts in the summer.  Often times the workouts were player led this summer.  There was finally a beacon of light on the program on August 4 when longtime assistant Lorena Cisneros stepped forward to be interim head coach.  She has 15 years of volleyball coaching experience and has been assistant in the LHS volleyball program.  She has also been Lady Red basketball assistant coach.

Some of the key players for the varsity include Sr. MH Shamari Lewis, Sr. L Klaire Anderson, Sr. DS Ryleigh Regier, Sr. RH Alexis Ugalde Sr. MH  Aurie Perry, Sr. OH Aleczis Green, Jr. Jeslynn Heredia, Jr. S Lily Santiago, So. DS Miah Janko, So. OH Haiden Lyon, So. RH Brooklyn Short, and So. Jyzelle Juarez.

Liberal endured a 4-30 season last year and went 9-22 in 2023.  But the success is recent. LHS won the WAC and went to state in 2022 going 27-10. They were 19-16 in 2021 which was their first winning season since 2016. Before the 19-16 season in 2021, the Redskins were 14-18, 16-21, 18-19, and 15-20 in 2020, 2019, 2018, and 2017. They were 17-16 in 2016. LHS went 97-57 in four years under Thais Baziquetto from 2010-2013. Their last state appearance before 2022 was 2008 when they went 29-12 and had won WAC in 2008 after also winning the conference in 2007(32-7) and 2006 (31-5).

Liberal volleyball was featured during Sportsguys Thursday morning.
