Liberal High School Names Joe Denoyer Head Cross Country Coach
Liberal, KS – Liberal High School is proud to announce the hiring of Joe Denoyer as the new Head Coach of the Boys and Girls Cross Country programs. A well-known community voice and longtime radio personality, Denoyer brings a passion for distance running, deep local roots, and a lifelong commitment to youth and athletics.
Denoyer, a native of St. Anne, Illinois, was a standout cross country and track athlete at St. Anne High School before continuing his career at Eastern Illinois University, where he competed on a nationally-ranked cross country team. During his time at Eastern, the Panthers qualified for the national meet three years in a row and entered as defending champions in 1978. While in college, Denoyer also coached junior high track at Charleston Jr. High, where he guided several distance athletes to the state meet.
After earning his degree in Physical Education and Health with an emphasis in coaching, Denoyer moved to Liberal in 1982 and has since become a respected community member and media figure. With over 40 years of experience in radio—primarily in country music and community programming—he’s built a reputation based on authenticity, involvement, and motivation.
“Running has always been a part of my life,” said Denoyer. “Cross country builds more than just endurance—it teaches discipline, heart, and how to push past limits. I’m honored to have the chance to mentor and train student-athletes here in Liberal. We’re going to work hard, run smart, and grow together.”
Liberal Athletic Director Kerri Miles praised Denoyer’s unique blend of athletic background and community leadership:
“Coach Denoyer brings a rare combination of competitive running experience, coaching knowledge, and unmatched energy. His commitment to the youth of our community and his understanding of how to connect and motivate young people makes him a great fit to lead our cross country program,” said Miles. “He’s a role model who will help shape not just strong runners, but strong individuals.”
Coach Denoyer is already preparing for the upcoming summer training schedule and looks forward to building a program centered on commitment, consistency, and character
