Kansas House Chair Not Dropping Immigration Bill

KSCB News - March 15, 2011 3:40 pm

The Kansas House Judiciary Committee’s chairman says he’s not giving up on his immigration bill, despite his committee’s refusal to endorse it.

State Rep. and Olathe Republican Lance Kinzer said Tuesday he still sees opportunities for the committee to consider his bill. It includes a provision mirroring an Arizona law enacted last year, requiring police to check the legal status of people they suspect of being in the U.S. illegally.

The Judiciary Committee voted Monday to table the bill indefinitely. The move doesn’t kill it, but a majority of the committee must agree to bring it up for it to be considered again.

Critics said the bill is too broad.

But Kinzer said he thinks some committee members want to avoid a debate on a contentious issue
