The Guymon Fire Department had a busy 3-day weekend starting Friday, July 4th. Guymon Fire Firefighters responded to a total of 6 dumpster fires, all resulting from improper disposal of fireworks. 2 grass fires, 1 resulting from fireworks which burned less than an acre. The second grass fire occurred Saturday evening northeast of Guymon burning approximately 25 acres and resulted from a lightning strike. “Guymon Paramedics responded to nearly 20 medical calls in the same time period with no injuries from fireworks reported”, said Fire Chief Grant Wadley.
Chief Wadley reached out to Memorial Hospital of Texas County Emergency Department which reported 2 injuries from fireworks were treated in their facility.
Compared to past years, 2025 saw an increase in dumpster fires and a substantial decrease in the amount of reported grass fires and acreages burned. Chief Wadley accounts for the decrease in grass fires was mainly due to recent rains and precipitation in the area.
