Flock A Friend For Mosaic
KSCB News - May 7, 2013 3:39 pm
Flock your neighbor, best friend, mother-in-law or whoever you want to get one up on from May 13th through June 7th, while supporting a very important mission for folks with intellectual disabilities in your community.
Every summer, members of the Self Advocacy Coalition of Kansas (SACK) gather in Topeka to learn skills on how to address issues and rights with their legislators. SACK is a statewide advocacy group made up of adults with intellectual that encourages and teaches people to speak up for themselves to obtain the highest level of empowerment and independence as possible. SACK’s mission is that ???All Kansans with developmental disabilities will have the opportunity to express opinions and make choices in order to create a life where they are treated with the same dignity and respect as persons without developmental disabilities??.
Mosaic in Liberal has 25 members of it’s Self Advocacy Coalition of Kansas (SACK) group, and they call their group ???Over the Rainbow??. They have a structured meeting once a month where they discuss the coalition-aligned initiatives coming from SACK and make goals to achieve those initiatives locally, as well as plan for their trip to Topeka in late June.
Mosaic will be supporting the individuals it serves who are members of their self advocacy group, ???Over the Rainbow?? to raise funds to cover expenses they will incur as they plan their trip to Topeka next spring. Mosaic staff will assist the group to land flocks of flamingos in yards of people who fall victim to a devious counterpart.
In order to fund themselves to travel to Topeka next spring to attend the SACK conference, they have organized a fundraiser to raise the $5,000.00 it will cost to cover travel, lodging, food and registration fees for the group’s members.
Community members may contact Mosaic at 624.3817 or 655.9167 to place an order for a flamingo flocking to take place. Rachel Arteaga is the group’s sponsor and will be the contact person should anyone have any questions. The cost is a $40 donation for 50 flamingos, $30 for 35 flamingos, $20 for 25 flamingos and $10 for 15 flamingos. Community members may even request an anonymous landing where the yard owner will not know who ordered the flocking. There are plenty of jokers and pranksters in the community who are already getting an idea about who to flock. Chances are those people know who they are. So, flocking insurance is available at a $10 premium to those folks.
Flocking victims need not fret or attempt to detain the birds themselves. They will be informed that a friend has paid Mosaic’s Over the Rainbow group to place the pink obscenities in their yard. These flamingos will roost on the victims lawn and will be removed at no charge. At that time, the current lawn owner may choose to get his buddy back for a donation range listed above.
Mosaic would like to encourage the community to make this a fun experience for the people it serves as well as creating some laughs among residents of Liberal.
