Hesston, Kansas – The KSHSAA 6A State Golf Tournament was held at Hesston Golf Course in Hesston, KS on Monday, October 20th & 21st. Liberal Sophomore Scarlett Carr qualified for State and represented the Lady Redskin’s program on a blustery day in central Kansas.
Twelve teams and twenty individuals from assorted schools qualified for the 2025 State Tournament for a field of 90 golfers. The WAC was represented by Garden City’s team of six, Liberal’s Scarlett Carr, and Dodge City’s Breckyn Putnam and Alexis Cunningham.
DAY ONE TEAM RESULTS:
1. Shawnee Mission East – 311 (+27)
2. Manhattan – 317 (+33)
3. Olathe West – 338 (+54)
4. Blue Valley North – 345 (+61)
5. Garden City – 345 (+61)
6. Mill Valley – 348 (+64)
7. Washburn Rural – 353 (+69)
8. Blue Valley West – 366 (+82)
9. Wichita Southeast – 372 (+88)
10. Blue Valley – 384 (+100)
11. Olathe South – 397 (+113)
12. Lawrence Free State – 397 (+113)
At the end of Day One, the field was cut down to six teams and the top fifteen individuals not on one of those six teams for a final field of 55.
Carr shot a 127 on Monday on the par 71 course, far short of the cut-line of 93 needed to advance as an individual to the second day of competition. The day began with 18 mph winds out of the South-Southwest. “That’s what we call a ‘two-club wind’,” said Coach Bert Luallen. “For every eight miles per hour of wind, you need an additional club when hitting into the wind.”
Beginning on hole #10, a par-5 dogleg right and hole #11, a long, uphill par-4, Scarlett struggled out of the gate hitting into the wind. “That struggling start was hard for Scarlett to overcome,” Luallen said. “It certainly discouraged her.” The winds affected the entire field, as the low score for day one was just one under par, by Ella Slicker of Shawnee Mission East; the next closest score was four strokes back at plus 3.
As day one proceeded, the SSW winds moved around to the NNW and increased. So, when Scarlett got to hole #5, which is another long par-5 hole, she was again hitting straight into the wind – which had increased to 23 mph with gusts to 34! “I would say that the players who started on hole #1 had an easier day with regard to the winds,” Luallen stated. “They were able to play #5 with a wind at their back. And by the time they reached #10, the wind had switched around to where it was again at their back. Whereas Scarlett had to play both of the longest holes on the course into the wind.”
“We’re so proud of Scarlett for making it to State,” said Luallen. “I know she’s disappointed and wanted to play better, but I think it was a good learning experience for her. Coach Lansden and I are looking forward to what she and the other girls can do next season.”
