A Redskin Rally Sinks South

The Liberal Redskins played at Wichita South Friday night, and during much of the first half their game went south with them.  But the Redskins fought back in gritty fashion to stun the Titans 28-21 Friday night at Carpenter Field in Wichita.  The Redskins trailed 14-0 and 21-7 before reeling in a 21-0 run to win.

Wichita South struck first as Titan quarterback Rashawn Johnson lofted a 34 yard touchdown to Ja’Marion Peters at the 3:36 mark to lead 6-0.  The two point attempt failed.  It was 6-0 Titans after one.  Jayden Kirk’s 15 yard TD score gave South a 14-0 lead after the two point conversion.  Liberal’s Gio Duran blocked a punt subsequently scooped up by Landry Fitzgerald who raced into the endzone for a touchdown.  The Natividad Ovalle extra point made it 14-7 with 3:17 to play in the first half.  But South punched back with a five yard Johnson touchdown up the middle for a 21-7 lead after the point after.  Liberal went to the air to put their first offensive points of the night on the board.  Tevin Cotter connected to James Fieser who made a catch on a 39 yard catch before Cotter found Fieser for a 21 yard touchdown on a diving catch with 45 seconds remaining in the half.  Ovalle’s PAT was good to make it 21-14.  There was no score in a penalty plagued fourth quarter.  Liberal went to their wishbone package and marched down the field in the fourth quarter capped with a Xavier Tafoya one yard run.  Liberal went for two and did not get it so they trailed 21-20 with 8:04 to play.  The Angry Red forced a punt and Liberal returned the punt to their own 38 with 4:26 to play.  Liberal converted a key 4th and 6 play when Cotter found Ismael Calderon over the middle.  Tevin Cotter found James Fieser in the endzone as Fieser made a juggling catch for the lead with 38 seconds remaining.  The Ovalle extra point made it 28-21.  An Austin Dodge interception sealed the win.

Stats will be added to the story later.  James Fieser was Epic Touch Player of the Game.

South is 0-2.  The Seward County Community College Next Step for the Liberal Redskins is a game at Guymon Friday night at 7 on 1270 and 92.3.
