The Independence Pirates stormed back to stun the Seward County Saints 87-83 in overtime Saturday afternoon and evening at Oakes Family Fieldhouse in Independence. It’s Seward’s first loss since November 25th against Coffeyville snapping a five game win streak. The Saints led this game most of the way but saw the Pirates finish regulation on a 7-2 run to send it to overtime.
The Saints led throughout the first half taking leads of 17-11, 19-13, and 28-19 before leading 40-32 at the half. Independence bolted out to a 47-45 lead early in the second half. Seward responded to lead 51-47 and 66-59 with 3:14 to play. Seward led 71-66 . Seward led 73-71 with 9.4 seconds left and the ball. But a steal and lay up for Indy tied the game and sent it to overtime. The Pirates never trailed in OT and outscored the Saints 14-10.
The Saints only had six assists in the loss. Seward shot 42 percent from the field making 4-17 from three point range and 19-29 from the foul line for 66 percent. Indy shot 38 percent from the field making 7-23 from three and 28-35 from the foul line. Seward had 19 turnovers and ICC had 15. SCCC out rebounded the Saints 48-41.
Lucas N’Gombo had 16 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Awit Mamer and JJ Chapman scored 14 points and eight rebounds a piece.
Independence is 8-5 overall and 6-2 in the Jayhawk and the Saints are 11-4 overall and 6-3 in the KJCCC. The Pirates have won 11 of the last 13 against the Saints. Seward hosts Barton Saturday at 4pm on 1270 and 92.3.
