One year after finishing 2–22 in the Jayhawk conference, the Seward County Saints go into the Christmas break in first place. That’s after winning a wild free throw laden 130–110 affair Saturday afternoon and evening in the Green House in Liberal. The game featured a dizzying number of free throws as Seward was 46–63 at the foul line while Butler went 22–39 at the free-throw line. Antonio Williams Junior backed up his 33 point game Wednesday night with a 32 point game Saturday. Lyna Brooks Jr. added 26.
Butler jumped out it leads of 10-5 and 28-22. The Saints rallied to take leads of 46–37 and 54–46. However, the Grizzlies rallied to lead 61–59 at halftime. Seward jumped out to a lead of 80–71 to begin the second half there was about a 15 minute delay as there was a score discrepancy in the game. Officials verified through game film the correct score of one03–95 The Saints sizzled down the stretch for the 20 point win.
The Saints shot 63% from the field while making 10–23 of their three-pointers. Butler shot 49% from the field and made 12–31 of their three-pointers Seward lead points off turnovers 30–16.
Six Saints scored in double digits led by Williams 32 points and Brooks Junior’s 26 points. Korbin Dowdell added a career high 20 points. Lucas N’Gombo Fought off sickness and scored 16 points with six rebounds. Awit Mamer and RJ McKinnie scored 11 a piece.
Butler Falls to 9–4 and 5–2 in the Jayhawk conference. Sewer is 11–3 and 6–2 in the Jayhawk the 1st place Saints will play at Independence on January 3 at 4 PM.
