Liberal got gritty. After two ankle injuries, two Liberal players came back and played through it and helped the Liberal Lady Redskins to a 53-48 win over the McPherson Lady Pups Saturday afternoon at Salina South High School. Shamari Lewis led Liberal with 20 points.
Liberal jumped out to a lead of 12-2. LHS led 15-8 after one quarter. When Kylie Rhine went out with an injury, McPherson cut the lead to 22-20. LHS led 24-20 at the half. McPherson built a 40-35 lead and led 40-38 after three. A Shamari Lewis three with three minutes left gave the Lady Redskins a 46-44 lead. A Mullens pass to Lewis made it 48-44. Liberal led 48-46 when a foul was called sending Maliyah Mullens to the line. She made 1 of 2 for the 49-46 lead. A technical foul was called against a McPherson player. Shamari Lewis made both free throws and Liberal got the ball. McPherson fouled Liberal and Kylie Rhine made two foul shots to lead 53-46.
Shamari Lewis was Epic Touch Player of the Game with 20 points. Trinity Olvera scored a career high 12 points.
McPherson is 1-2. Liberal is 3-0 for the first time in three years. Liberal plays at Hays Tuesday night at 6pm with Redskin Pre-game at 5:45 on 1270 and 92.3.
