Rotten Before the Romp for Redskins

It was another slow start for the Liberal Redskins Friday night.  But LHS scored 52 unanswered points before taking down the Guymon Tigers 52-13 Friday night at McKinnon Field Memorial Stadium in Guymon.  It was Liberal’s 23rd straight win over Guymon in their first game at Guymon since 2018.

Guymon recovered their own kick off to begin the game.  Miguel Vargas found Carlos Costilla for a 20 yard touchdown at the 10:45 mark.  Guymon’s Jeremah Bankston intercepted a Liberal pass at the 10:32 mark.  Guymon scored on a screen play on 4th and 13 from the Liberal 17 with a screen pass from Miguel Vargas to Isaiah Dunnagan.  The point after was blocked by Blayden Betts to make it 13-0 at the 9:20 mark.  Tevin Cotter went to work throwing a 25 yard touchdown to the back of the north endzone to James Fieser to make it 13-7 after the Natividad Ovalle point after.  Isaiah Dunnagan intercepted another Redskin pass with 2:39 to play in the first quarter.  A high snap by Guymon’s long snapper gave the ball to Liberal at the GHS 11 with 11 seconds left in the first quarter.  On 4th and 9, Tevin Cotter found James Fieser for a wide open touchdown in the south endzone for a 19-13 lead after the fake kick and  two point attempt failed.  Eathan Hernandez intercepted a Guymon pass on the GHS sideline.  Blayden Betts three yard touchdown run gave the Redskins a 19-13 lead after the two point attempt failed.  Liberal scored right before half as Tevin Cotter found James Fieser for a 43 yard touchdown with 5:01 to play in the half.  The Ovalle extra point made it 26-13 which was the half time score.  Tevin Cotter scrambled right and lowered his shoulder into the endzone for a scored with 7:23 to play in the third to lead 33-13 after the Ovalle PAT.  A Xavier Tafoya six yard touchdown with 2:33 to go in the third made it 39-13 after the point after missed.  Isaac Castaneda recovered a Guymon fumble on the kick return.  A Blayden Betts 23 yard touchdown run with 2:21 to play in the third made it 46-13 after the Ovalle PAT.  James Fieser intercepted a Guymon pass.  The only fourth quarter score was a Tevin Cotter nine yard touchdown pass to Blayden Betts with 8:52 to play.

Tevin Cotter threw four touchdown passes.  James Fieser caught three touchdown passes.  Blayden Betts was Epic Touch Player of the Game with two sacks, a blocked kick, two rushing touchdowns, and a receiving touchdown.  Stats will be added to the story.

Guymon is 2-2 and Liberal is 3-0 for a third straight year.  The Redskins play at Dodge City Friday night at 7pm with Redskin Pre-game at 6pm on 1270 and 92.3.
