Sharp Family Champions Center Ribbon Cutting Rescheduled

The Sharp Family Champions Center ribbon-cutting, originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 29, has been rescheduled due to weather conditions. A heavy snowfall on Monday and Tuesday left pedestrian access to the new indoor practice facility muddy and difficult to navigate.

“We have already spoken with our major donors, Gene and Jo Ann Sharp, and set Feb. 24 as our alternate date,” said SCCC President, Dr. Ken Trzaska. The delay will allow time for the ground to dry and, as planned sidewalks to be poured.

“This project has required tremendous tenacity throughout its evolution, so we should not be daunted by another slight delay,” said Trzaska. “Our celebration Feb. 24 will be a fitting culmination to Phase 1 of this important addition to campus.”

A ribbon cutting, in tandem with the Liberal Area Chamber of Commerce ambassadors, and public open house, will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 24, with light refreshments and a chance to see the interior of the practice facility.

One fitting bonus? Trzaska noted that the vision for an indoor facility grew from Gene Sharp’s concern for baseball players, who Sharp noticed shoveling snow from Brent Gould Field in order to practice with then-coach Galen McSpadden.

“It’s no small irony that the Sharp Family Champions Center is weather-proof,” said Trzaska.
