Emergency Management Says Potential for Flooding Moderate

Joe Denoyer - August 22, 2018 11:45 am

Dodge City has experienced the 5th wettest August on record – so far, with 9 days left in this month.

Seward County is experiencing a similar August. Many ponds and low lying areas around Liberal are already full, and the ground is fairly well saturated. Western Kansas is in a monsoonal weather pattern and we are experiencing, frequent rains, many of them have been substantial. The above circumstances combine to make any heavy rain a potential for flash flooding in many neighborhoods in Liberal.

Residents should treat every Thunderstorm as if it may produce 3-6 inches of rain, prepare your property for heavy rains and protect vehicles by moving them to higher ground.

Wherever possible provide barriers to water building up near windows, doors or foundations.

Take a look around your property and secure any items that may float away or otherwise be damaged, also prevent standing water that will later provide habitat for mosquitos.
