The Liberal Redskin soccer team has enjoyed three straight winning seasons. They were 13-5 last year going 5-3 in the WAC. They were 13-5-1 two years and 11-5-3 three years ago. They will aim to continue their winning ways this season under 6th year head coach Carlos Ruiz.
The Redskins return five starters from last season’s team which won a playoff game over Lawrence Free State in Liberal.
KSHSAA Covered has listed Ariel Guytan as a Player to Watch in 6A. Here is what they say.
Gaytan helped lead Liberal to a 13-5 record in 2025, emerging as the team’s top offensive threat with 15 goals and two assists. He scored 10 times during Liberal’s 8-1 start and finished with four multi-goal matches, including hat tricks against Lamar (Colo.) and Olathe North. Gaytan earned first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors and enters his senior season with 20 career goals and three assists. With fellow all-league selections Josh Garcia, Aaron Duque and Johnny Young lost to graduation, Liberal will lean heavily on Gaytan to lead the attack again this season.
Other key players are Sr. goalkeeper Elder Ramirez, Sr. midfielder Isacc Erives, Jr. defense Kadyn Gonzalez, Jr. defense Abdiel Gonzalez, and Jr. midfielder Gio Barrera.
Ruiz is Liberal’s second ever coach. Lori Navarro was 9-4 in her last season of 2020. The program started in 1998 and compiled a 291-97-14 record with 22 winning seasons in the first 23 seasons. The Redskins have won the Western Athletic Conference 13 times, including 11 in a row at one time. Liberal won the state in 2011.
The Redskins were featured during Sportsguys Tuesday morning.
