Saints Go into Conference Play Like a Lion

The Saints went into March like a lion.  The Seward County Saints baseball team put it all together Wednesday afternoon and evening at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend.  The Saints won 5-3 in game one and 9-3 in game two for the sweep in their season opening Jayhawk West double header.

The Saints won game one 5-3.  SCCC out-hit the Cougars 8-6.  Both teams had two errors.   David Brabb lined a double to right center to score Grant Cox in the first. Barton tied it with a home run in the bottom of the second.  Hayden Ramage doubled to lead off the fourth.  Jhett Huffman homered off the scoreboard in left center for the 3-1 lead.  A pair of Cougar errors paved the way for a two run fifth.  One run scored on an error.  The other run scored on a Hayden Ramage single to left.  Barton chased home a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-2.

Michael Lujan was Black Hills Energy Player of the Game going 5 innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.  Braden Whipple pitched two innings for the save.  Grant Cox and Hayden Ramage had two hits a piece.

In game two, the Saints won 9-3 for the sweep.  SCCC out-hit the Cougars 15-10.  BCC had three errors.   the Cougars scored one in the second.  Jorge Beitia-Tunon blasted a three run home run to left with two outs in the fourth for the 3-1 lead.  The Saints plated three in the fifth.  Grant Cox and Hayden Ramage singled.  David Brabb singled home a run.  Jhett Huffman and Jorge Beitia Tunon both grounded a two out RBI singles to left for the 6-1 lead.  David Brabb doubled down the third baseline with one out in the seventh.  Ryan Todd singled and Jhett Huffman lined a single to left to score a run and make it 7-1.  In the eighth, Grant Cox legged out a double off of the diving second baseman.  Hayden Ramage lifted a towering home run to left for the 9-1 lead.

Brooks Kappelmann pitched 5 and 2/3 strong innings with seven strikeouts and three walks for the win.  He allowed one run.  Ashton Creighton went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing two runs.  Jhett Huffman was Black Hills Energy Player of the Game going 5-5 in the win.  Hayden Ramage went 3-5 with a two run home run.  Jorge Beitia Tunon was 2-5 with four RBI’s and a home run.

Barton falls to 14-4 overall and 0-2 in the KJCCC.  Seward wins both games at Barton for the second time in three years.  Seward is 8-13 overall but 2-0 in the Jayhawk West.  The same two teams play Saturday at 1pm at Brent Gould Field with the Dugout Show at 12:45 on 1270 and 92.3 FM.  Only game one will be broadcast due to Saints basketball coverage.
