The Liberal High School Boys and Girls Cross Country team’s season came to an end on Saturday in Manhattan KS, at the Sub-State Meet. Competing against schools like, Washburn Rural, Lawrence Free State, Derby, Maize, Lawrence High, and others, the Redskins knew they were going to have to run their best performances of the season to be in the mix of the 3 teams and first 15 individual runners to cross the finish line, to get a chance at the State Meet in Lawrence. These gritty, never say die, runners did not disappoint, as several of the individuals ran their best times of the season, but still came up short.
Leading the way in the Boys race was Freshman Nehemiah Jaramillo. He took 35th place overall, with a season best time of 18:22. Next for the Redskin Harriers was Junior EJ Martinez in 40th, with an 18:43, Senior Caleb Zamora, 42nd, at 19:10, Junior Piero Huaman, 45th, 19:26 and rounding out the scoring in 46th place, was Junior J’Kobe Contreras, at 19:36. Freshman Gian Almanza was the 6th runner for Liberal, running a PR, and breaking 20:00 for the first time, finishing in 19:45, for 47th place, and Senior Brandon Ailon came in at 20:47, good for 52nd place. The Boys finished Sub-State in 7th place in a race that was won by Washburn Rural, followed by Lawrence High School. Dodge City claimed the final spot for the right to go to state in 3rd.
For the Lady Redskins, Sophomore Valeria Ontiveros, just missed a chance to move on to the State meet, she finished just 2 places out as she came in 17th place, with a time of 21:36. Freshman Courtney Carroll crossed the line next for the Redskins in 22nd place at 22:15, then it was Junior Alondra Gonzalez in 28th with a time of 23:06. Freshman Yazy Medina ran a 24:39, good for 35th place, followed by Junior Sandra Ventura in 38th place with a time of 25:13. Rounding out the Girls team was Senior Jhovana Cruz in 39th place, 25:32, and Freshman Kamila Huerta with a time of 25:33 for 40th place. The Girls team finised the meet in 6th place. Washburn Rural took first, followed by Lawrence Free State, and Derby.
The Liberal Cross Country team will graduate Caleb Zamora, Brandon Ailon, Abel Gomez, Cain Ortiz, Jhovana Cruz, Selena Ontiveros, Yuly Molina, Ariadne Ortega, and Ana Chitic.
