Mayetta, KS — Manhattan Senior Maddie Myers tied the course record on day one of the KSHSAA 6A Girls State Tournament at the difficult Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta with a 9-under par 63. She followed that up with a 73 on day 2 for a 8-under two-day total of 136 to earn Medalist honors at this year’s event. Wichita Southeast Senior Alina Lam was second with a two-day total of 143 (-1; 76/67), while Blue Valley’s Freshman Jessica Ma took third with a 149 (+5; 71/78).
Shawnee Mission East took the 6A State Title with a score of 651 (316/335) after finishing runner-up last season. Olathe West was second with a score of 659 (319/340). Garden City took third with a score of 684 (350/334) edging last year’s champion, Manhattan, by three strokes.
Senior Rylie Friess and Junior Scarlett Carr fought valiantly on the difficult Firekeeper track but were not able to qualify for day two of the tournament. Carr, playing in her second consecutive 6A State Tournament, shot a 117 – which was ten strokes better than her appearance last year at Heston. Friess recorded a 124.
“I’m really proud of both of these young ladies,” said fifth-year Head Coach Bert Luallen. “They represented themselves, LHS, and Liberal extremely well. And I want to thank everyone who supported our girls throughout this season.”
Day one saw seemingly tougher pin-placements than day-two with several pins placed on one side of the green or the other, directly behind a trap. “I was frankly surprised at the pin-placements,” said Luallen. “I expected the tougher pin-placements to be on day two – not the first day!”
