In farm country turning over dirt is a familiar part of the food
production process. This Thursday September 10th at 9am the Meade Ministerial Alliance in
Meade Kansas invites friends and community members to a special groundbreaking ceremony
as they turn over dirt for the new Meade Food Bank facility.
The ceremony will mark the beginning of construction on a new facility dedicated to helping
meet the food security needs of Meade County and beyond. Since the 1980’s churches across
Meade county have partnered to help neighbors through hard times with dry goods and canned
foods. Throughout 2021-22, less than 50 people a month utilized this assistance offered by the
ministerial alliance. But over the last several years that need has need has exploded with an
average of over 600 people served each month.
The community has continually met that growth with generosity and compassion, but the growth
has posed challenges no pre-existing facility could address. The facility being constructed will
provide nearly three times as much space as the current location for sorting, storing, and
distributing food. The plans also allow for the distribution of fresh produce, accommodate a
certified kitchen for processing bulk donations, and space for educational and life skills courses
to equip clients beyond their food needs.
The Meade Food Bank would like to thank the Kansas Food Bank, the Western Kansas
Community Foundation, the Statesman Foundation of Southwest Kansas, the Mabee
Foundation, as well as a multitude of private donors and supporting organizations for helping to
make this community dream a reality through their counsel, contributions, grant funding, and
prayers.
The groundbreaking ceremony will include remarks from Meade community leaders, a
recognition of partnering organizations, a prayer of dedication, and the ceremonial ground
breaking. Friends, community members, and members of the media are invited to attend.
September 10th at 9am 119 North Beam Center Drive Meade, KS (north of moon mist motel).
