Black History Month events highlight the next week at Seward County Community College, as the SCCC Library hosts “Conversations on Race: History & Future” at 9 a.m. and noon Wednesday. The forum, which is open to the public, presents local speakers who will share their experiences and conduct a Q&A session with guests. Speakers include Liberal High School Athletic Director Kerri Miles, SCCC Corrosion Instructor Autry Coleman and retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major Ivanhoe Love Jr., Director of Adolescent Support Services.
“We’re excited to bring people who have lived through significant events in U.S. history and the Civil Rights era into conversation with our students,” said SCCC Library Director Casandra Norin.
Topics of discussion include the Vietnam war, segregated schools and integration experiences, being a Black athlete, student, and educator, and more.
As a follow-up to the day, guests will be invited to submit discussion questions for the “Rooted” podcast, created and hosted by SCCC student and women’s basketball player Andrea Tribble. A resident of Minneapolis, Minn., Tribble launched her podcast, which showcases the voices of young Black students, prior to her arrival on campus.
