Kansas Sportscasters Treated Like Royalty in KC

KSCB News - May 6, 2011 5:10 pm

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters laid out the blue carpet for Kansas sportscasters Wednesday. The KAB hosted the Sports Seminar at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. Sportscasters from Hays, Great Bend, Fort Scott, Pittsburg, Dodge City, Garden City, Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan, Wichita, Kansas City, Concordia, Hutchinson, Liberal, and elsewhere attended the event. KSCB’s Brock Kappelmann and SCCC/ATS sports information director Roy Allen attended the event. Allen has filled in as a color announcer and substitute play-by-play announcer the past several years for KSCB broadcasts.

During the morning session, the sportscasters ventured around to round tables for short presentations. There were tables for play-by-play critiques and ideas for selling sports on radio. The Kansas Shrine Bowl, K-State Sports Network, Jayhawk Radio Network, Chiefs Radio Network, Kansas State High School Activities Association, Kansas Speedway, and Royals promotions held round tables.

The afternoon session included the presentation of the Hod Humiston Award to K-State’s Wyatt Thompson. Thompson and KU’s Bob Davis talked to the group about the Cats and Hawks. The Royals manager Ned Yost and Vice President and Assistant General Manager Dean Taylor talked about the team. Royals announcers Bob Davis, Denny Mathews, Ryan LeFebvre, Frank White, and Steve Stewart talked shop. Major League Baseball Supervisor of Major League Umpires Steve Palermo told stories about his umpiring career. The group then watched batting practice and saw the Baltimore Orioles beat the Royals 3-2.
