Beauregard Joins 1,000 Point Club in Season Ending Loss

Brock Kappelmann - March 3, 2017 7:01 am

The Seward County Saints gave it a valiant run, but came up short 76-72 against the Barton Cougars in the first round of the Region VI Tournament, ending Seward’s season at 9-22. In the loss, Charles Beauregard joined elite company, becoming one of just 13 players in school history to reach the 1,000 point mark, tying Shelby Walton for 12th place with 1,001 career points at night’s end.Unlike their past four games while shorthanded, the Saints got off to a great start Thursday night, jumping out to a 8-2 lead to begin things against the 2nd seeded Cougars. Barton found some steam to take their first lead of the night at 11-10 and pushed their lead to 21-14 with 8:02 remaining in the half. An 8-0 Seward run moments later, highlighted by a two handed slam by Tre Kidd put the Saints back in front and the two teams went back and forth until a late layup gave Barton a 31-29 lead at the half.

A three from Malik Brown early in the second half knotted the score back up at 37 and Seward had a 40-38 lead with 14:59 remaining in the contest. From there though, it was all Cougars. Barton went on a 12-0 run over the next 4:19 to turn a two point Seward lead into a 10 point Cougar lead in the blink of an eye. Seward responded with four straight to cut the Barton lead to 50-44 and with 8:09 remaining, a layup from Charles Beauregard made Saints history as he became just the 13th member of the elusive 1,000 point club in a five point contest. Things turned South though as Beauregard was whistled for his fifth foul with 6:39 remaining, fouling him out of the game as Seward struggled to score from that point on, going the final 5:15 of the game without a single field goal as Barton ran away with the lead and the game 76-62.

Both teams shot 47% on the night, the difference came with 15 Seward turnovers and 10 Barton offensive rebounds. Brown led Seward with 15 points in the loss while Martavious Wilson had 14, all in the first half, and Kidd had 12 off the Saints bench.

Seward finishes their season 9-22, its worst year since 1977 while Barton improves to 24-7 and moves on to the Region VI Quarterfinals where they will take on Cowley Sunday at Hartman Arena.
