Job Description

The Mechanic position is responsible for the diagnosis, assessment and repair of all Seward County Landfill trucks, equipment and other related items. This position may require the employee to operate a Side Load or Roll Off truck or landfill equipment, from time to time.

Position Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required

Valid Driver’s License

Work Experience

Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in maintenance

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Computer Skills to perform online training
  • A  valid CDL Driver’s License

 

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  1. Assesses and diagnoses needed repairs to Seward County Landfill trucks and other equipment
  2. Repairs trucks and miscellaneous equipment
  3. Diagnose and repair:
    1. engine problems
    2. air conditioning issues
    3. auto-transmissions
    4. manual transmissions
  4. Assess repair or replace:
    1. Air and/or hydraulic brakes
    2. Drivelines
    3. Hydraulic systems
    4. Electrical systems
    5. Coolant systems
  5. Operates welder and cutting torch, as needed
  6. Fabricates parts, as needed
  7. Perform assigned tasks without supervision

  2. Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that is customer focused with the general public, clients, co-workers and management
  3. Performs other related work, as required by the Waste Haul and/or Landfill Foreman

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KSA –Knowledge of

  1. United States Department of Transportation (DOT), States of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, Seward County, surrounding Counties, towns and cities, and City of Liberal rules and regulations
  2. Subtitle “D” Regulations
  3. Landfill Department Operations Plans
  4. Landfill Department Contingency Plans
  5. Sideload Trucks, ,Rolloff Trucks and Landfill equipment for repair and maintenance
  6. Operating Sideload Truck, Rolloff Truck and Landfill equipment, when needed.
  7. Principles and procedures for providing internal and external customer service; this includes assessing the needs of both to meet quality standards for services and to meet evaluation of customer satisfaction
  8. Seward County Employee Manual
  9. Operating characteristics of tractors, mowers, rollers, utility vehicles and power hand tools
  10. Proper structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and correct grammar

Physical Requirements

The work of the Maintenance position is a highly responsible position which requires mental acuity. The Maintenance will be required to do complicated tasks, sit for an hour or more, speak, hear, stand, walk, balance, stoop, squat, bend, and/or kneel. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Hours

45+ Hour Work Week – Full Time; Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; hours may vary
