Job Description

Under general supervision the Grader/Equipment Operator performs work of moderate difficulty in the operation of heavy equipment and multi-axle trucks used in the construction, maintenance and repair of Seward County roads. Although the work performed is frequently laid out in general terms and inspected upon completion, intermediate phases of work are completed without assistance. The Grader/Equipment Operator position is a highly responsible position because the Grader/Equipment Operator is entrusted with the safe repair and of all roads within Seward County. Due to unforeseen circumstances, this position may be stressful at times and requires the ability of the Grader/Equipment Operator to occasionally consider a different course of action of deviate from standard operating procedures to get the job done.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  1. Follows all safety regulations, procedures, processes and project goals
  2. Ensures all work meets with Road & Bridge Department expectations
  3. Assesses needed road and ditch repairs; conveys information to Road Foreman
  4. Maintain proper signage in each district and keep all debris/trash cleared from ditch/roadway.
  5. Operates all equipment in a safe manner (dump trucks, back hoe, semi-truck trailer, scraper, water truck, skid loaders, salt trucks, plows, loaders, asphalt saw, street sweeper, chain saws tractor with packer or mower behind, etc.
  6. Plows snow, salt and/or sands Seward County roads
  7. Operate power-driven machine, equipped with movable hoe or shovel (front or back mounted, pull or push to fill bucket) to excavate or move dirt, rock, sand and other materials
  8. Operate tractor (rubber-tired or track-type) equipped with front mounted blade to gouge out, push, transport, level and distribute earth, rocks, trees, structures, etc. in preparation for and during construction and maintenance of roads, pits, quarries, etc.
    1. Push levels and depress pedals to move machine, to lower and push/pull bucker into material to be loaded and to lift, swing an dump contents of bucket into truck, railcar or onto conveyor, hopper or stockpile with minimal spillage
  9. Push other pieces of equipment, as intended for their efficient operation
    1. Start engine, shift gears, press pedals and move levers to perform all driving and operating functions
  10. Drive blade and move levers to regulate height and angle of grader blade, to raise and lower scarifier or ripper that loosens packed materials to permit grading and to tilt front wheels when making sharp turns or working on steep or slick surfaces
  11. Drive blade in successive passes over working area and observes references takes, slope meter or hand signals of assisting worker to level surface
    1. Feel lever and listen to sound of engine to determine depth of cut and/or hardness of material
  12. Operate self-propelled blade (grader, road grader, motor grader) to spread, remove, plow, doze and level dirt, gravel, hot and cold mix asphalt, snow, ice, stone, etc. to specifications in maintenance and construction of earthwork structures such as ditches, slopes, highways, street, dikes and temporary roads
  13. Perform rough grading
    1. Start engine, shift gears, press pedals and turn steering wheel to perform driving functions.Move levers to raise, lower, tilt, scoop and dump, engage and disengage from bulk materials in the performance of operating functions
  14. Maintains regular attendance and punctuality

 

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Adjusts work assignments and schedules in the event of an emergency to participate in emergency preparedness, response and recover activities, as assigned

Physical Requirements

The work of a Grader/Equipment Operator is a highly responsible position which requires mental acuity. The Grader/Equipment Operator will be required to do complicated tasks: work in day and night environment, able to work outdoors in an extremely hot, cold, dry or wet environment; must be able to work in hazardous or dangerous work areas or situations; must be capable of working under stressful situations including operation of equipment in bad weather or other difficult condition, e.g., heights, limited head room; must have acceptable vision for performing pre/post trip inspection, driving trucks, operating heavy equipment, shovel/raking roadway materials, setting up signs/cones, installing right-of-way fencing, maintaining bridges/guardrails/culverts/road-side drainage, operating the crusher plant, weed whacking and trimming trees; must have acceptable hearing to hear on the telephone and in public contact; must have appropriate voice skills to be clearly understood on the telephone, mobile radio and in public contact; must have fine and gross motor skills and full use of fingers, hands and arms to perform duties; must have good cognitive skills; must be able to sit for an hour or more, speak, hear, stand, walk, balance, stoop, squat, bend, and/or kneel. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  May be required to lift, carry, drag or push boxes or equipment up to 135 pounds. Must be able to tarp loads, pull open a truck’s hood and other equipment requiring 100 pounds of force. Must be able to use grease gun to lube equipment, use hand tools, remove/replace guards and rails, requires upper body forces of up to 40 pounds. Must be able to climb ladders to get into and out of grader and other vehicle/heavy equipment. 40 Hour Work Week – Full Time; Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; hours may vary

General outdoor environment and may be required to work outdoors in extreme temperatures
