Butler Blanks Seward on Sophomore Night

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County women’s soccer team lost a 4-0 decision to the Butler Grizzlies on Wednesday evening at Redskin Field.

Seward (5-8-1, 4-8-1 KJCCC) honored its eight sophomore student-athletes and two sophomore student managers in a pregame ceremony. Those sophomores are Alondra Gomez, Ericka Castillo, Meredith Rosas, Eduarda Martins, Giuliana Granada, Jairely Ibarra, Andrea Gomez, Arely Rivas, Angela Garcia and Beatriz Mielczarek.

Butler (8-6-5, 7-3-3) has not lost a match since the Saints defeated them 1-0 in El Dorado on Sept. 27th.

The Saints battled for the first 15 minutes but Butler eventually broke through in the 17th minute as London Ingram scored the first goal of the evening. Seward kept the Grizzlies off the board for the rest of the half and headed into halftime trailing 1-0. The Saints managed just one shot in the first half.

Butler scored three second half goals within a two minute and eight second span in the second half beginning in the 55th minute as Darya Karabanko netted a goal. Kennedi Smith scored the next two for the Grizzlies who pulled away midway through the second half.

For the game, Seward was outshot 13-5. Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Benck finished with five saves and she was often put in one-on-one positions throughout the game. Sophomore Eduarda Martins paced Seward with two shots.

Seward closes the regular season out on Saturday as they travel to Garden City for a match at noon.
