Cross Country Competes at Newton

Newton was the next stop for the Liberal High School Cross Country team on Saturday, October 4th. The Varsity teams both came away with 7th place finishes in the meet.

Leading the way once again for the Varsity Boys, was Caleb Zamora in 19th place with a time of 18:25. Caleb medaled in the race. EJ Martinez was next for the Redskins with a time of 19:14, placing 35th. Piero Huaman was next in 38th place with a time of 19:39, then it was Abel Gomez running a 21:02 for 53rd. Right behind abel was J’Kobe Contreras in 54th with a time of 21:06 to round out the scoring. Also in the Varsity boys race was Brandon Ailon who finished in 59th place at 21:49, followed by Elian Escobar at 24:01, Oscar Jiminez at 24:44, and Tanner Denoyer with a time of 26:16.

Sofia Lucena led the way for the Redskin Varsity girls in 20th place, earning her a medal, with a time of 22:31. Coming on strong in Newton and the 2nd Lady Redskin through the chute was Rubi Alvarez in 36th place with a time of 23:38, she was followed by Valeria Ontiveros in 41st with a time of 24:08. Just two seconds back from Valeria was Alondra Gonzales in 42nd with a time of 24:10, and to round out the scoring for the Lady Redskins was Sandra Ventura with a time of 24:38, good for 47th place. The next three runners for Liberal were Sophia Mercado at 25:33, followed by Juliana Hernandez in 25:37, then it was Jhovana Cruz in 25:59.

Elliot Vasquez was the lone JV Boys runner. He finished with a time of 27:04. Girs JV saw Ana Chitic just out of medal contention in 24th place with a time of 27:36. Next was Jayloni West in 36th place at 29:51, followed by Jazmin Portillo with a time of 34:13.

The Redskin Harriers will travel to Wichita on October 11th to compete in the “Wild Wind XC Festival” at Trinity High School.
