Redskins Aim to Continue Regional Run

The Liberal Redskin soccer team looks to continue their run in 2025.  They have won a regional title in 6A the past two years and made it to their 11th quarterfinal last year finishing 13-5-1 and 5-2-1 in the WAC.

Carlos Ruiz is in his 5th season as head coach.  They lose WAC Player of the Year and all time leading scorer Suain Moncayo to graduation.  But Josh Garcia steps into a larger role.  He is one of the KSHSAA Covered Players to Watch.  Here is what KSHSAA Covered says about Garcia.

“A four-year starter, Garcia has played center midfielder and center back for Liberal. He was the Redskins’ top distributor last year, dishing out a team-high 13 assists and adding three goals. Garcia split set piece duties on free kicks and corners and helped Liberal put together 10 shutouts in 2024. It was also one of Liberal’s highest scoring offenses with 74 goals scored on the season. Garcia was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference pick last year and earned honorable-mention All-6A honors. Liberal went 13-5-1 in 2024 but will have to replace a first-team All-6A selection in Suain Moncayo, who was a senior.”

Other key Redskins include Sr. F Diego Pavia, Sr. F Johnny Young, Sr. D Aron Duque, Sr. CMF D’Alessandro Chavira, Jr. D Isaac Erives, and Jr. F Ariel Gaytan.

The Redskins are back to their winning ways going 13-5-1 last year and 11-5-3 two years ago.  They were 8-9-1 in 2022.  Ruiz is Liberal’s second ever coach. Lori Navarro was 9-4 in her last season of 2020. The program started in 1998 and compiled a 291-97-14 record with 22 winning seasons in the first 23 seasons. The Redskins have won the Western Athletic Conference 13 times, including 11 in a row at one time. Liberal won the state in 2011.

The Redskins were featured during Sportsguys Friday morning.
