LA JUNTA, Colo. – The Seward County women’s soccer team opened the 2025 season victorious, taking down Otero College 2-1 at Tiger Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Saints (1-0) picked up the win on the road to open the season giving first year head coach Marcela Bueno her first career win as a head coach.
Seward fell behind early in the first half as Otero (0-1) netted a goal just four minutes into the game as a Rattler snuck behind the Saints defense and avoided Seward’s goalie in a one-on-one to net the first goal of the game.
With 18:13 remaining in the first half, freshman forward Julia Astrath received a pass from just beyond midfield in the box and made a defender miss before pushing in Seward’s first goal of the season to tie the game 1-1.
Eight minutes later Seward took the lead as Astrath and freshman midfielder Juliana Salazar passed off to each other until Astrath found an open Salazar who placed the ball in the left corner pocket to put Seward ahead for good.
The Saints played stingy defense in the second half to hold Otero off the board and secure the win. It marks the second consecutive season that the Saints have won their season opener.
Seward is off until Tuesday, Sept. 2nd when they travel to Trinidad, Colo., to take on Trinidad State College in a 3 p.m. CST game.
