Cadet law Gives Students Law Enforcement Experience

Joe Denoyer - June 10, 2022 3:54 pm

High school students interested in law enforcement will spend next week at the Cadet Law Enforcement Academy program. Cadet Law is hosted by the Patrol and sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. Cadet Law this year will be held from June 12-17, 2022.

The goal of Cadet Law is to give young men and women the opportunity to learn more about what law enforcement jobs entail—the duties, training, and discipline that go along with a career in the field. Additionally, students will learn a great deal about leadership, and about coming together as a team.

Students at Cadet Law are trained by KHP troopers who spend the week in Salina, encouraging the students, and helping them develop.

Throughout the week, the cadets have a rigorous schedule to follow. The students experience a variety of classroom instruction and the real-world activities of a trooper. Cadets go to the firing range to practice using firearms. They also practice pursuit driving at the driving range and car stop scenarios. Additionally, they ride with the Patrol’s pilots in agency airplanes and see presentations from the Patrol’s canine handlers. Physical training and attention to detail are both emphasized throughout the duration of the training.

“We are excited to host these students next week for our annual Cadet Law Enforcement Academy,” said Colonel Herman T. Jones, Superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol. “This week is rewarding and exciting for the students. They learn a great deal about themselves, and about working together as a team. They also learn an additional component about careers in law enforcement. We have had many previous Cadet Law students return to become KHP Troopers.”
