On September 17, 2021 approximately 10:00 pm, a 22 year old male (Payton Lapoint) from Liberal, was a passenger of a vehicle, and ran from a traffic stop with a Seward County Deputy. The Deputy was not pursuing Lapoint at this time because he noticed the driver of the vehicle was still in the vehicle.
As Lapoint was running he reached into his pants pocket and discharged a hand gun, striking himself in the leg. Lapoint was transported to Southwest Medical Center by Seward County EMS with non-life threating injuries. Lapoint was later released from Southwest Medical Center. There are no pending charges at this time.
