Linda Diane Mitchell, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and lifelong servant of her church and community, passed away on October 19, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas, following a prolonged illness. She was 85 years old. Linda lived her entire life in the town she loved, and she leaves behind a legacy of faith, music, and kindness that touched nearly everyone who crossed her path.
Born on August 3, 1941, to Carl and Velma McClung, Linda grew up with a deep love of learning and music that would shape the rest of her days. She pursued her education with determination, first attending Colorado Women’s College in Denver for two years, then spending a year at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, before graduating with her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell.
On September 3, 1961, Linda married the love of her life, Kenny Mitchell, in Elkhart. Theirs was a marriage marked by partnership and devotion, and the couple recently celebrated their remarkable 65th wedding anniversary. Early in their life together, the couple spent 18 months living in Germany and Turkey while Kenny served in the military. When they returned home to Elkhart, Kenny began farming alongside his father, Roy Mitchell, and the two of them put down deep roots in Morton County. Their contributions to the community were recognized in 2023 when Linda and Kenny were honored as Morton County Pioneers by the Morton County Historical Society and the dedication of the Mitchell Family Park in 2025.
Linda poured herself into the people and places she loved. Above all, she was a devoted homemaker who cherished her role as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Yet her gifts reached far beyond her own household. For more than 20 years, she worked at the Morton County Library, where she shared her love of books and learning. She also served as President of the PEO Sisterhood for five terms, a testament to her leadership and her commitment to the women in her community.
Music was woven into the very fabric of who Linda was. She began playing the piano and organ at church when she was just nine years old, and she never stopped. For many years, she served as the music director and a Sunday school teacher at First Christian Church in Elkhart, blessing the congregation with her talent’s week after week. Her musical and singing gifts were well known throughout the community, and those who heard her play carry the memory of that music with them still.
Those who knew Linda remember her kindness and grace most of all. She greeted everyone with a smile, and she had a way of making people feel welcome and valued. In her quieter moments, she delighted in ceramics, working in her yard, cooking and baking for the people she loved, and maintaining a meticulous home. Nothing, however, brought her greater joy than attending the activities of her children and grandchildren, where she was always among their proudest supporters.
Linda’s Christian faith was the guiding principle of her life. She lived each day grounded in her beliefs, and that faith sustained her through every season. She loved her Lord, her church, and her family with equal devotion, and she trusted in the promise of eternal life even as her health declined.
Linda is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Kenneth L. Mitchell; her sons, Brian L. Mitchell and his wife Rosa of Elkhart, and Brent A. Mitchell and his wife Debra of Kechi, and her daughter, Kendra L. Ramsey and her husband Cory of Amarillo. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Jordan Mitchell, Audrey Thomas (John), Dillon Mitchell (Ashleigh), Brandon Mitchell (Hannah), Cameron Mitchell, Jaden Mitchell, Ryan Ramsey (DeAnna), Madison Ramsey, and Luke Ramsey, as well as her precious great-granddaughter, Everleigh Mitchell. Her family was her greatest treasure, and the love she gave them will endure for generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl McClung and Velma McClung, and sister, Karen Elkins.
A funeral service celebrating Linda’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the First Church of God in Elkhart, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Elkhart Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, October 23, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with family present from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.
