The Liberal Redskins started fast but watched the Great Bend Panthers scored 28 unanswered points in a 42-12 loss at Great Bend Friday night.
Liberal got off to a great start in Great Bend. After the Redskin offense went 3 and out on the opening drive, Liberal punted to Great Bend. The Panther return man fumbled the return and Ismael Calderon recovered. On the next play, Darion Denton hit Prince Collins for a 52 yard touchdown. Liberal recovered the ensuing kick on the GBHS 23 yard line. Ariel Gaytan booted a 22 yard field goal at the 7:28 mark for a 10-0 lead before the potent Panther offense touchded the ball. The Panthers blocked a Liberal punt recovered at the LHS 7. Great Bend’s Cal Schartz ran it in from seven yards out on the next play to make it 10-7 with 1:40 to play before half. Smiley found Great Bend’s Jaxon Wondra for a three yard touchdown to lead 14-10. The Angry Red defense held GBHS on a 4th and 13 stop from the GB 17 with 1:44 remaining before half leading to a 14-10 halftime score.
The Angry Red defense stymied the Panthers in the third quarter. A high snap on a punt led to Great Bend’s punter throwing the ball through the north endzone for a safety to make it 14-12 with 6:25 to play in the third. After the Angry Red had forced six straight incomplete passes, Smiley hit Schartz on 4th and 11 for a 44 yard touchdown pass on a swingout with 3:02 to play in the third. A Schartz 67 yard TD gashed a tired Redskin defense and made it 28-12 with 1:21 to play in the third. The Panthers tacked on a 27 yard td pass from Smiley to Premer and a Dreiling pick 6 in the fourth quarter.

Great Bend is 6-0 and 3-0 in the WAC beating LHS for a third straight year. LHS is 3-3 and 1-2 in the WAC. Liberal hosts Kapaun for Senior Night Friday night at 7 at the Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex.
