Dodge City, KS — Liberal High School Lady Redskins Golf Team traveled to Dodge City for their second tournament of the 2026 season. For the first time in at least eight seasons, LHS finished in third among the WAC schools, finishing ahead of Dodge City and Great Bend. A total of ten teams competed in this year’s Dodge City High School Invitational at the Par 73 Mariah Hills Golf Course. The Lady Redskins finished 4th as a team and nearly every Lady Redskin golfer recorded career best scores.
The tournament had its own excitement, as Garden City’s Brooke Savolt and Wichita Southeast’s Alina Lam (last year’s medalist for this event) battled back-and-forth all day long. Savolt took the early lead, only to have Lam overtake her and gain the lead. Eventually, the two finished the round tied at two under par. Brooke Savolt won the playoff with a birdie on the first play-off hole to claim the title.
Senior Rylie Friess led the way for LHS with a career best 105 to finish 19th.
Right behind Friess, with a score of 106, was Junior Scarlett Carr. Tying her career best score, Scarlett finished in a tie for 21st. Last season, Carr scored a score of 107 on this same course at the KSHSAA 6A Sub-State Tournament to qualify individually for State.
Freshman Ella Carr, playing in her first 18-hole tournament, recorded her career-best score of 111 to finish 29th.
Junior Valeria Gandara Vega improved her career best score by four strokes, finishing with a 114 to finish 31st.
Sophomore Aniya Stegman improved on her previous career best score by eight strokes to finish with a 127 and a 39th position. And Sophomore Jyzelle Juarez, playing in her first-ever tournament finished with a 144 – essentially her career best!
“I’m really proud of the girls,” fifth year head coach Bert Luallen stated. “Both individually and as a team, they made a statement. To finish in 4th place in the tournament and 3rd among the WAC schools is a huge step forward in the continuing development of our program. And the most exciting thing to me is that every one of the girls felt they could have done better and want to do better.”
