In year three under coach JR Mendoza, the Southwestern Heights Mustangs aim to use their skill as an advantage. They return a talented group of multi sport athletes who aim to take Heights to their first winning season since 2007. Plus Mendoza has coached these players since middle school giving familiarity to the team.
The Mustangs have been 2-7 each of the past two years and return eight starters to the defense and seven to the offense. The Mustangs have 33 out for football which is up from 27 at this time last year.
Some of the key players are Sr. QB Manny Mendoza, Sr. lineman Andres Juarez, Sr. Rb/MLB Eilian Baeza, Sr. WRDB Jason Amerin, Sr. WR/DB Juanluis Perez, Sr. TE/DE Tabio Tellez, Sr. lineman Andrew Edmonds, Sr. lineman Alex Krull, So. RB/LB Xavier Delatorre, So. WR/S Hayes Saucedo, Jr. WR/CB Roberto Sigala, Jr. WR/LB Orlando Espinoza, and Jr. lineman Slade Ray.
The Mustangs have five different teams on their schedule in comparison to last year. Lakin, Kingman, Cimarron, and Chapparal are this year’s class 2A district games. SWH was featured Friday morning during the Sportsguys.
