On a sunny but blustery afternoon and evening at the National Beef Sports Complex, the Liberal softball team opened with a pair of wins over the Ashland-South Central Blue Wolves Friday. LHS rallied to win the first game 10-4 and won the second game 11-0.
In game one, Liberal scored one in the first and two in the second. The Blue Wolves countered with two in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead 4-3. The Redskins responded with four in the fifth and three in the sixth. Liberal out-hit Ashland 12-6. Both teams had one error. Allie Champion went 3-4 with three RBI’s. Miley Janko and Devaney Carter had two hits a piece. Devaney Carter, Miley Janko, Allie Champion, and Brooklyn Short hit doubles. Haiden Lyon, Miley Janko, and Rebecca McLane had triples. Devaney Carter pitched six innings with 13 strikeouts and five walks.
The Lady Red was more dominant in game two. LHS out-hit the Blue Wolves 9-1. Liberal scored two in the fourth followed by two run innings in the third, fourth, and fifth. Haiden Lyon was 3-3 with two doubles, a triple, and three RBI’s. Brooklyn Short was 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI’s, and two runs. Miley Janko was 2-2. Haiden Lyon pitched five innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Liberal is 2-0 and plays at Kingman against Halstead at 1:30 Saturday. If Liberal wins, they play the winner of Hesston and Kingman at 4:30. It they lose, they play the loser of that game right after their game.
