Avery Marchino scored a career-high 38 points as the Seward Lady Saints won handily over the visiting Independence Lady Pirates 91-52 Wednesday night in the Green House. Marchino’s night ties Stephani Rhoten (07-08), Cassie Cordell (02-03), and Stacy Wewe (94-95) for fifth most points in a single game in school history.
Independence jumped out to a 15-10 lead but SCCC finished the first quarter on a 10-2 run to lead 20-17 at the end of one quarter. Seward jumped out in the second quarter to a 31-18 lead. ICC cut the lead to 31-25. Seward led 39-27 at the half. Seward outscored ICC 29-16 in the third quarter to make it 68-43 after three.
The Black Hills Energy Player of the Game is Avery Marchino 38 points which is tied for the fifth most in program history. Tyniah Smith added 11 points, eight rebounds, and six steals. Kimora Fagan had 11 points and six rebounds.
Seward shot 55 percent from the field going 3-11 from three point range and 16-25 from the foul line. Independence shot 31 percent making 5-24 from three and 5-12 from the foul line. Seward out-rebounded Independence 46-35. SCCC led points in the paint 66-28.
Independence falls to 5-21 overall and 2-18 in the Jayhawk. It’s Seward’s sixth straight win over Indy. Seward improves to 18-9 overall and 13-8 in the KJCCC. Seward has the bye on Saturday and plays at Barton Wednesday night at 5:30 with Saints Shoot-around at 5:15 on 1270 and 92.3.
