Two Vie For Cinco de Mayo Queen

One of the highlights of the 11th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be the crowning of the Cinco de Mayo Queen at the Little Britches Rodeo on Saturday, May 10, at the Seward County Fair Grounds. The two queen candidates will participate in the Cinco de Mayo parade at 1 p.m. Saturday on Western Avenue and then go to the 2014 Rodeo Fiesta which will start at 2 p.m. and is slated to end at 8 p.m.

Competing this year are Jackie Loya, 17, and Myriam Rubio, 16. The queen candidates will be holding fundraisers and selling tickets to see who can take the top prize. This year, the contestants will receive 25 percent of the money they raise over $1000 for college expenses and also will receive a scholarship from SCCC/ATS and the Cinco de Mayo Committee. The 2014 Cinco de Mayo Queen will participate in wide variety of community events.

Loya, the daughter of Frederico and Hayde Loya, is a native of Chihuahua and is currently a senior at Southwestern Heights High School. She has four siblings and the family lives in Liberal. Her school activities include volleyball, basketball and track. After High School, she plans to attend Seward County Community College where she will play for the Lady Saints Basketball team. She wants to get a degree in teaching and coaching.

Rubio, the daughter of Fidel and Olivia Rubio, was born and raised in Liberal and will graduate from Liberal High School in 2015. She has three siblings. Her school activities include cross country track and softball. Her long-term goals are to get a degree in social work so that she can help people.
