Turkey Bowl A Tradition At Southlawn Elementary

KSCB News - November 22, 2011 11:22 am

Upholding a tradition at Southlawn Elementary, the teachers and staff held their 3rd annual “Turkey Bowl” on Tuesday, November 22nd, the last day of school before Thanksgiving break. The tradition started in the fall of 2009 and is in honor of a very dear teacher and friend, Mrs. Julia Thompson. To participate, all were asked to bring $3 to contribute to the cost of buying the turkeys and for the monetary prizes.

How does it work? Before the students are dismissed to class for the day, the breakfast tables are moved and we tape a bull’s-eye at the east end of the gym and the starting line at the west end . All participants “bowl” a frozen 12 lb. turkey down to the bull’s-eye. The first place winner was Pat Greer and she received a 16 lb. turkey and $12. The second place winner was Jeri Davidson and she received a 12 lb. turkey and $11. The third place winner was Shelly Martin and she also received a 12 lb. turkey and $11. Winners also a certificate, and some bragging rights for a whole year…until next year!
