Storm Activity Keeps Liberal Fire Department Busy

Joe Denoyer - January 16, 2017 10:58 am

During a 24 hour period on Sunday 15th, Liberal firefighters responded to a total of 21 calls.  Eighteen of these responses were storm related.

At 5:28 am firefighters responded to 721 N. Jordan to investigate smoke in the residence.  A heating element near plastic materials was determined to be the source of the smoke.

At 9:59 am firefighters were called to 719 S. New York for smoke issuing from the exterior walls of a residence.  Fire was discovered to be burning beneath the siding and was believed to be caused by a downed electric service line.  The fire was confined to exterior structural material and no injuries were reported.  The fire department was assisted on scene by Liberal Police, Southern Pioneer Electric and Black Hills Energy.

At 12:30 pm firefighters responded to 624 N. Prospect for a tree burning due to downed power lines.  This was followed almost immediately at 12:36 pm for grass, trees and shrubs burning due to live power lines on the ground.

At 1:16 pm firefighters responded to 719 S. Roosevelt for a fire in the basement of the residence.  On arrival personnel found that the fire had been mostly extinguished with a portable extinguisher, but that gas was still escaping inside the home due to a flex line damaged by fire.  Once utilities had been secured the residence was ventilated of both smoke and natural gas.  The residence suffered moderate damaged from fire and smoke.  This fire is also believed to be caused by a downed electric service line in contact with the structure.  No injuries were reported.  The fire department was assisted on scene by Liberal Police, Seward County EMS, American Red Cross, Southern Pioneer Electric and Black Hills Energy.

At 2:19 pm firefighters were again called to 1111 Westhaven to standby for arcing power lines, and at 4:29 pm to 619 N. Nebraska to standby for arcing power lines.

At 6:23 pm firefighters responded to 720 W. 2nd Street for a residence on fire due to the service line being pulled from the wall.  On arrival firefighters discovered that the fire had self extinguished and was confined to the exterior of the residence.  No injuries were reported.  The fire department was assisted on scene by Liberal Police, Seward County EMS, American Red Cross, and Southern Pioneer Electric.

At 6:41 pm firefighters were called to 316 W. 1st Street to standby for downed power lines, at 6:52 pm to 43 S. Webster to standby for downed power lines.  At 6:59 pm to 30 S. Jordan for tree limbs fallen on the power lines.  At 7:04 pm to 850 S. Kansas for tree limbs on the power lines.

Simultaneously at 7:04 pm firefighters were dispatched to 1128 Fairview for an electric meter pulled from the residence and an odor of smoke in the residence.

At 7:08 pm firefighters responded to the area of Grant St. & McCray Blvd. for power lines downed by tree limbs and power knocked out to several homes on that block.

At 7:48 pm firefighters were called to 613 N. Sherman to standby for arcing power lines, and at 8:44 pm to 417 Princeton for a transformer explosion with smoldering material that had landed on top of a residence.

At 10:35 pm firefighters responded to 735 S. Lincoln for a fire in the bathroom of the residence.  On arrival personnel quickly extinguished the fire.  However, a downed power line feeding the residence remained energized and several areas of smoldering material were unable to be extinguished until the power supple could be cut.  The residence suffered moderate damaged from fire and smoke.  This fire is also believed to be caused by a downed electric service line in contact with the structure.  No injuries were reported.  The fire department was assisted on scene by Liberal Police, Seward County EMS, Southern Pioneer Electric and Black Hills Energy.

At 11:56 pm firefighters were called to 15th St. & Tulane for a tree on the power line with power outage to the North end of the city.  And at 2:42 am for a tree on the power lines.
