Signing Day at LHS

KSCB News - February 18, 2011 6:40 am

After the official signing day was disrupted by school being delayed due to cold weather, the Redskins had their day in the sun Thursday afternoon. Jade Cathey signed a Kansas State on signing day and Drew Wills signed at Garden City. Thursday, two football players and two cross country runners made their decisions official. Record setting quarterback Slader McVey signed with LHS graduate Rion Rhoades at Hutchinson Community College. Hutch expects to utilize him as a slot receiver who could throw some. McVey passes for a record setting 1,663 yards and 18 touchdowns his junior year and 1,660 yards and 13 touchdowns his senior year. Tyson Deaton signed at Garden City. He will be used as an H-back likely at Garden which will be a similar role he had at LHS. Deaton had 41 catches for 615 yards and four touchdowns this year after 24 catches for 449 yards and five touchdowns his junior year.

Two LHS cross country runners who helped bring the program to the top of Western Kansas signed Thursday. Alejandro Avila signed at Garden City. Alan Grajeda signed at Fort Hays State. The year before the two joined the LHS cross country program, LHS was last in the WAC. They took second their freshman year and then won WAC the past three years. Avila and Grajeda helped Liberal place third at state this year. Interviews air Friday morning during the Sportsguys between 7:37 and 9 a.m. on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net.
