Seward’s Griffith Stands Alone Acadimically

KSCB News - May 3, 2013 1:44 pm

Seward County’s Johnny Griffith is in the middle of a
historic week of firsts. Wednesday, he became the first NJCAA baseball
player to sign to play for Army and on Thursday he was the only junior
college player of nearly 400 college baseball players to be named to a
Capital One Academic All-District Team.

The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball
Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America,
have been released to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for
their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital
One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic
All-America teams programs since 2011.

The Academic All-District teams include the
student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into
eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is
the second year of the expanded Academic All-America(r) program as
CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a
College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of
scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I,
NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College
Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

Griffith was named to the District 6 College Division
Academic All-District Team. The District 6 team is comprised of players
from non-NCAA schools throughout the states of Kansas, Montana,
Nebraska, and South Dakota. Griffith is wrapping up his sophomore
season at Seward County and holds a 3.85 GPA and is an English major.
He is the leading hitter for the Jayhawk West Conference Champion Saints
at .405 and has driven home 25 runs on the season. He has 14 extra base
hits on the year that include 11 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 home run and
is fourth on the team in runs scored with 28.

First-team Academic All-District honorees including
Griffith now advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team
ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will
be selected later this month.
