Saints defeat Division II ThunderWolves for sixth straight win

PUEBLO, Colo. – The third-ranked Seward County Community College men’s tennis team rallied to beat Division II Colorado State-Pueblo, 6-1, on Friday. The Saints, who improved to 9-4, have won six in a row and eight of their last nine contests.

The Saints got off to a slow start by losing the doubles point, falling in two of the three matches. No. 1 Gabe Nery and Sander Jans were beaten by Ogulcan Deniz and Daniel Garcia, 3-6 and Carlo Izurieta and Francisco Vargas lost to Dante Alcala and Richard Garcia, 4-6. The lone victory came at No. 3 when Nic Rousset and Nyathi Motlojoa beat James Ryan and Rafael Abreu, 6-4.

Seward cranked it up on the singles side and swept Colorado State-Pueblo to win the next six points. No. 1 Rousset beat Daniel Garcia, 6-2, 6, 3 to get the Saints rolling. No. 4 Vargas defeated Richard Garcia, 6-1, 6-2, No. 5 Izurieta downed Alcala, 6-3, 6-2, No. 3 Nery knocked off Ryan, 6-4, 6-2 and No. 2 Jans battled past Deniz, 6-4, 7-5. In the final match, Franck Soulerot won a hard fought match over Abreu, 7-5 7-6.

The Saints continue their weekend trip in Colorado with a match against Division I Northern Colorado on Saturday.

Lady Saints extend streak to six with win over Division II Colorado State-Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – The seventh-ranked Seward County Community College women’s tennis team extended their winning streak to six games with a 6-1 win over Division II Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday. The Lady Saints improved to 9-3 overall.

The Lady Saints took a 1-0 advantage by taking the doubles point. No. 1 Patricia Panta and Maria Aveiga lost to Nia Matthews and Kali Hamilton, 4-6, but No. 2 Eva Liu and Sofia Belluco defeated Sarah Megilligan and Emily Sproston, 7-5. Seward took the point when Colorado State-Pueblo defaulted the third match.

The ThunderWolves tied the match at 1-1 at the start of singles when No. 4 Alisa Handrugan fell to Megilligan, 0-6, 1-6. The Lady Saints took over after that, winning the next five matches. No. 1 Panta defeated Matthews, 6-1, 6-1, No. 2 Aveiga beat Hamilton, 6-3,6-1, No. 3 Belluco knocked off Sproston, 6-3, 6-1 and No. 5 Liu beat Katherine Ambrose, 6-2, 6-1. Colorado State-Pueblo defaulted the No. 6 singles match for the final point.

Seward continues its weekend trip in Colorado with a match against Colorado College on Sunday.
