Saints Rank Fifth in Sporting News Poll

KSCB News - October 15, 2009 12:00 am

After a season in which they went 23-9, the Seward County Saints Basketball Team will open the season ranked 5th in the country according to Sporting News Magazine. Seward returns 5 of their top 6 players from a season ago including Latiq Agard, Tony Smith, Marcus James, Jon Tassin, and Robert Sigala, equating to approximately 70% of their scoring from last year. That along with the addition of transfer Donte McCarter who averaged over 16 points and 5 assists last season at Pitt Community College in Texas and a slew of other talented newcomers should make Seward the team to beat in the West this season. The other four teams listed in the top 5 were Three Rivers, Midland, Tallahassee, and Mount San Jacinto with Hutchinson and Coffeyville the only other Jayhawk teams to draw interest in the report. Along with the team accolades, Saints guard Tony Smith was named to the 5th team All-American list after a season in which he averaged 14 points, 5.9 assists, and 2.2 steals per contest. Continuing their preseason scrimmages throughout the end of the month the Saints will lace their sneakers up for real Friday, November 7th in their home Pepsi Classic against the Colorado Kings at 8:00.
