Robber Falls Through Ceiling

KSCB News - August 20, 2009 12:00 am

Swift gathering of forensic evidence landed a Guymon man in jail, after he allegedly fell through the ceiling of a local convenience store during an attempted robbery and was caught on tape.

Robert Eugene Rogers, 25, was arrested by authorities after allegedly breaking into the Mary Kay convenience store through an air conditioning unit and climbing into the building with the intent to steal.

He is being charged with burglary in the second degree.

According to the affidavit for probable cause filed at the Texas County Court Clerk’s Office, Officers responded to an alarm at Mary Kay’s.

Upon arrival, Officer’s noticed debris on the floor that had come from the ceiling of the store, as well as a few ceiling tiles that were missing and a ventilation duct was hanging down. An Officer went to the back of the building, and noticed the back door was wide open. The owner of the store arrived and told Officers that no one had permission to be in the store, and that surveillance cameras were in use.

Upon reviewing the security tape, a black male was observed falling through the ceiling, wearing all black. After attempting to get back into the ceiling, the suspect failed to do so and later kicked the front glass doors twice. Unable to break the glass, he fled out the back of the store.

Officers reported that the suspect was able to use an electrical junction box and an air conditioning unit to gain access to the roof. The air conditioning unit was forcibly removed from the top of the store, leaving a one foot wide by one foot long access hole.

A hammer was also discovered at the scene, leading Officers to believe that this tool had been used to help with the removal of the air conditioner.

The suspect was identified after surveillance footage was reviewed to be known by the alias of “Blackie.” Officers located the residence of this individual who admitted he went by the name “Blackie.” Officers then gained permission to search Rogers’ bedroom where they were able to locate dirty black jeans and shoes allegedly matching the tread used at the crime scene.

A search warrant was later presented by authorities where they found a black hoodie fitting the description of the intruder.

Rogers is being held in the Texas County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond and is currently awaiting his next court date.
