Redskins Win Great Bend Meet

The Liberal High School cross country teams kicked off their season Thursday at the Great Bend Invitational. Liberal and Great Bend were also joined by Ellinwood, Hays, Holcomb, Hutchinson, Garden City, Salina South, Elyria Christian, and Central Christian. The meet consisted of 5 races: freshman boys, junior varsity boys, junior varsity girls, varsity girls, and varsity boys.

? The varsity girls were led by senior Mercy Perez. Perez completed the 4K race in a time of 17:08 good enough for 6 th place. Junior Vanny Diaz was the next Redskin to cross the line in 19 th place. Junior Allyson Nondorf placed 25th, junior Kelly Ramirez came in 29 th place, and freshman Samantha Terrazez was the 30 th runner. Senior Madison Butler placed 32 nd and sophomore Kacie Mathews was 33 rd . The girls team consisted of four new faces to the Redskin cross country team. Garden City won the girls race with a dominating 18 points out of a possible 15. Ellinwood placed 2 nd with 65 points. The Lady Redskins finished third with 103 points.

? The varsity boys ran the last race of the night. The Redskins had 5 returning runners who competed in the state meet a year ago. The senior duo of Sammy Obando and Erving Altamirano paced the Redskins. Obando placed 4 th and completed the 5K course in 17:49 . Altamirano was the 6 th runner to cross the line in 18:06 . Freshman Edgar Moreno placed 11 th , while juniors Luis Medina and Obed Quintana placed 12 th and 13 th . Junior Ivan Aleman, who ran his first ever cross country race, placed 17 th . Sophomore Emilio Tovilla was the 9 th runner to cross the line but his time and place did not count. The Redskins were the team champions with a score of 46. 2 nd place was Ellinwood with 74 points, and Great Bend was third with a score of 78. The junior varsity boys and girls teams both placed 2 nd in their division.

? The Redskin harriers travel to Hesston next Thursday, September 12th, for the Swather Special where 52 schools are signed up to attend.
