Redskins Cross Country Opens with High Aspirations

Liberal opens their cross season at Great Bend Thursday. Fourth year head coach Tyson McGuire has 48 out for the sport with 27 boys and 21 girls. The boys won the WAC last year and have finished fourth twice and fifth at state. The girls have made state two of the three years.

Liberal’s varsity lineup to begin the season is Sr. Obed Quintana, last year’s WAC Runner of the Year, Jr. Greg McClurg, Sr. Ivan Aleman, Jr. Alex Chance, Sr. Jerry Valdez, Sr. Luis Medina, So. Juan Beltran. Injured Jr. Amelio Tovilla will also figure into the varsity lineup.

The girls are young but McGuire thinks this could be the best girls team at LHS he has coached. The lineup for Great Bend is So. Saw Ahmara, So. Cam Slatten, So. Yanelly Jurado, Fr. Tonia Minjarez, Sr. Allison Nondorf, So. Karen Hernandez, and Fr. Reyn Slatten.

Sept. 11- at Hesston

Sept. 18- at Hays

Sept. 25- at Lake Afton near Goddard

Oct. 4- at Newton

Oct. 16- at Hays for WAC

Oct. 25- Regionals

Oct. 31- State at Lawrence
