Primary Care Clinic Grants Awarded to Communities

KDHE Secretary Roderick L. Bremby announced $6.3 million in primary care clinic and health center grants to help thousands of Kansans, many with no health insurance, obtain access to comprehensive primary and preventive health care services. Thirty-nine clinics across the state were awarded funds ranging from $17,872 to $453,517. The funding will enable these community-based projects to continue assuring access to affordable primary health care services for underserved Kansas residents. The Mexican American Ministries in both Seward and Grant counties were awarded funding through this grant.

ź??This grant program demonstrates the unique relationship and shared responsibility of the state of Kansas, local leaders, health care volunteers, foundations, and the federal government in supporting systems of care to assure access to primary and preventive health services for all Kansans,ź?ť Bremby said. ź??The services these clinics provide are critically important, making available needed health care services for families without health insurance or those who cannot afford the high cost of care.ź?ť

In 2008, nearly 180,000 Kansans received health care at a state-funded primary care clinic. Nearly 60 percent of these patients were uninsured, and over 65 percent were in households that earn less than the federal poverty level.
