Police Chase Starts In Liberal Ends in Crash in Stevens County

On January 10, 2012, at about 9:36 p.m., a police officer attempted to stop the driver of a white Chevy Tahoe for suspicion of DUI. The driver of the Tahoe did not stop and attempted to elude the officer.

The pursuit was joined by a Seward County Sheriff deputy as the driver of the Tahoe left the city on Second Street Road. The driver of the Tahoe eventually lost control of his vehicle and rolled just inside Stevens County. The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to investigate the accident.

The driver,Lawrence Craig Campfield, 56, was taken to Southwest Medical Center by Seward County EMS in serious condition. His condition was upgraded to fair upon arrival at the hospital.

An affidavit has been filed with the Seward County Attorney’s office charging the driver with driving under the influence, attempt to elude, reckless driving, illegal display, fail to signal and no proof of insurance.
