Phillip J. (Phil) Bartel

Phillip J. (Phil) Bartel, age 61, passed away Thursday afternoon, June 21, 2018, at the Ashland Health Center, Ashland, Kansas, as a result of an automobile accident.
 
He was born August 9, 1956, at Meade, Kansas, the son of Pete R. and Malenda L. (Penner) Bartel.  As a young boy he attended Meade schools, graduating from Meade High School in 1974.  After his graduation, he attended Tabor College, Hillsboro, receiving his undergraduate degree.  He then returned to Meade and began his career as a well driller with Bartel Well Drilling for over forty years.  In later years, he also continued his families baking business, Bartel Bake Shop.
 
He attended the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher for first and second grade children for over twenty years, AWANA’s, and served as a church camp cook for many years.   He enjoyed writing stories, cooking and baking, playing the piano and music, and spending time with his family and friends.
 
On August 7, 1976, he married Maralee Wiens at Meade, Kansas.   She survives.
 
Other survivors include two daughters, Laureen Coles and husband Jamie of Meade, and Alisha James and husband Nathan of Haviland, Kansas; two brothers, Dan Bartel and wife TeriAnn of Minneola, Kansas, and Reuben Bartel and wife Jeris of Meade; a sister, Rachel Schmidt and husband Norman of Hillsboro, Kansas; and three grandchildren, Mary, Jonathan, and Jemimah.
 
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2018, at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church, Meade. Friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade.  Interment will follow the service in the Emmanuel Mennonite Church Cemetery, rural Meade.
