Kathleen West-McGhee

Kathleen West-McGhee, 68, of Liberal, passed early Saturday May 12, 2018 at Wesley Medical Center at Wichita, KS.

She was born on October 6, 1949 to Brack and Pearlie Mae (Tucker) West at Slaton, TX.

Kathleen’s family moved to Liberal, KS while she was a child. She was a graduate of Liberal High School, class of 1969. After graduating high school she was an operator for Southwestern Bell; she then went on to obtain her Cosmetologist license. Kathleen also worked at Great Lakes Airlines, from which she retired from. After retiring she obtained her CDL and went to work at the Bus Barn as a bus driver for USD480. At the time of her passing she had been working at Mosaic in Liberal. On February 16, 1972 she ran in the Pancake Race and won with an official time of 59.1 seconds, breaking the previous record of 59.5 seconds and placing her in the Guinness Book of World Records; she also appeared on the National Television show “Tell the Truth” . Kathleen enjoyed watching movies, family nights, cooking & baking, traveling, helping others and loved her family and grandchildren. She was a member of the Bibleway Church of God In Christ, where she was active in Sunday School and as a youth leader

Kathleen is survived by Two Daughters- Anitra West of Liberal, KS, Tonya King of Sunbury, PA; Two Sons- Jabari DeVorce of Cherokee, OK, Keitha West of Liberal, KS; Three Brothers- Clifford West, Sr. of Liberal, KS, Brack West, Jr. of Wichita, KS, Gary West of Wichita, KS; Three Sisters- Virginia West of Liberal, KS, Pearline West of Tulsa, OK, Sylvia Chapman of Independence, MO; 12 Grandchildren, Two Great Grandchildren and several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins,

She was preceded in death by her parents and Sister- Ollie Milton.

There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Memorial Services will be 10:00 am Friday, May 18, 2018 at the First Southern Baptist Church in Liberal.
